A message from Dr. Wiles:
Dear GCSD Families,
This past week members of the Guilderland Central School District community were recognized for their dedication to community service, excellence in teaching and for becoming well-rounded student leaders. As I attended the events to honor these individuals, there was a common theme of commitment to others. Each, in their own way, exemplifies this commitment.
Last night, 167 Farnsworth Middle School students were inducted to the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS). The induction ceremony celebrated FMS students becoming NJHS members and making a commitment to the values of scholarship, service, leadership, character and citizenship. I look forward to seeing what they accomplish in their school and community in the future.
On Tuesday, at the Capital District YMCA Student and Educator Breakfast, eight Guilderland High School students were recognized for volunteerism, leadership and service to their community. Learn more about how these exemplary students are changing the world, close to home.
Finally, on Saturday, April 22, GHS English teacher Alicia Wein was awarded the University at Albany Alumni Association’s Bertha Brimmer Medal for 2023, which celebrates excellence in teaching grades K-12. Not only is Ms. Wein an exceptional teacher, but she is passionately committed to advocating for her students. We are quite fortunate to have Ms. Wein as a teacher at GHS.
Budget hearing and board of education meeting, Tuesday, May 2, 7:00 p.m.
The 2023-24 school budget public hearing will be held in conjunction with the regular board of education meeting on Tuesday, May 2, at 7:00 p.m. At the budget hearing, the proposed $119,772,194 spending plan for the 2023-24 school year will be presented and reviewed.
This meeting will be held in the Large Group Instruction room at Guilderland High School and is open to the public. The meeting will also be live-streamed and can be viewed on the GHS Media YouTube channel.
Board of education Meet the Candidates Night, May 8, 6:00 p.m.
On Monday, May 8, at 6:00 p.m., the Guilderland PTA Council is hosting Meet the Candidates Night to introduce candidates for the board of education to the community. The forum will be livestreamed on the GHS Media YouTube channel and will be recorded.
District residents will vote on May 16 to fill three seats on the GCSD Board of Education. Candidates run at-large and are elected to unpaid terms. Three candidates will serve three-year terms beginning July 1, 2023. The seats are currently held by Kimberly Blasiak, Rebecca Butterfield and Judy Slack; all three are running as incumbents. Candidate profiles are available on the district website.
Please note a few changes to the school year calendar. Since all allotted inclement weather days were used, Friday, May 26 is a regular day of school; there will not be a contingent holiday. In addition, FMS has early dismissal on June 22-23, not as indicated on the printed district calendar that was distributed in August.
Have a wonderful weekend.
Sincerely,
Marie Wiles, Ph.D.
Superintendent
