A message from Dr. Wiles:
Dear GCSD Families,
Earlier this week a devastating earthquake struck Turkey and Syria. While rescue efforts continue, and there have been some awe-inspiring stories, more than 20,000 have died and hundreds of thousands have been left homeless with temperatures below freezing. This news is heartbreaking for all, but most especially for those members of the Guilderland community with ties to the region. So many people in this area of the world are struggling and greatly need assistance. I’m proud to say that some Guilderland Central School District schools have already begun relief efforts; please watch for communications from your individual building in the coming days for information. If you would like to act immediately, members of Albany’s Turkish community are launching a supply and clothing drive to help victims. For more information, please refer to the linked flyer.
In addition, the following humanitarian organizations are helping those affected in Turkey and Syria and are accepting donations.
- International Rescue Committee (IRC)
- United Nations, World Food Programme
- Embrace Relief
- Direct Relief
- World Central Kitchen
DEI fireside chat, Feb. 15, 6:30-7:30 p.m.
The DEI Engagement Committee has begun holding a series of “fireside chats” at the Guilderland Public Library, with the next one scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 15, 6:30-7:30 p.m. The purpose of these forums is to provide Guilderland community members with the opportunity to speak to members of the committee in an informal setting. Residents can ask questions, discuss personal experiences and learn more about the work of the GCSD DEI committee. You can learn more about the complete schedule of fireside chats as well as the breadth of DEI work that has been completed this school year on the district website.
Wishing all GCSD families a wonderful weekend.
Sincerely,
Marie Wiles, Ph.D.
Superintendent
