About the program
Driver Education is offered after school during the school year and also during the regular summer session. The course consists of 24 hours of classroom instruction and 24 hours of in-car instruction.
Some students will already have their license while others have never been behind the wheel. Classroom instruction is intended to help students realize how our highway transportation system works, and their role in it. Lessons include vehicle controls, right of way, physics involved in driving, signs and markings. Their responsibility as a driver is discussed with emphasis on emotions and substances that can impact driving ability. Tips on buying a vehicle, shopping for insurance, and vehicle maintenance are also part of the class instruction.
The in-car segment includes many of the same topics in practice. Learning how to enter traffic from intersections, merging, maintaining speed, parking, lane changes, managing space, visibility and time. Instruction can vary depending on the student’s ability level.
For more information, please contact the Guilderland High School West Office at (518) 861-8591, ext. 1200.
Classroom Instruction: 24 hours of in-class instruction.
In-car Observation: 18 hours of road in-car time.
Student Driving Time: 6 hours of individual behind-the-wheel instruction.
Total: 48 hours
In order to participate, students must be at least 16 years old and have a valid New York State learner’s permit or driver’s license.
It is the student’s responsibility to meet the course requirements as established by the New York State Education Department.
Please see the calendar posted on the internet for actual dates of each section.
Times will be reserved at the time application is made and payment is received. Students are not allowed to switch classroom times back and forth; they must attend the course they chose, either Monday, 5:45 – 7:15 p.m., or Wednesdays, 5:45 – 7:15 p.m., barring hospitalization or death in the family. NOTE: Any snow days or cancellations will be made up at the discretion of the classroom teacher – this may include classes on Tuesdays, Thursdays or Fridays. Students are encouraged to advise the classroom teacher of any accommodations needed to assist the student in their learning. Students are contacted frequently through the Guilderland High School e-mail account regarding this program. Please make sure to check your account for any updates.
In-car observation and student driving time
Driving will occur once per week on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays from 2:30 – 4 p.m. or 4 – 5:30 p.m. Note: Any snow days or cancellations will be made up at the discretion of the driving instructor. These will be on Fridays. Times will be reserved at the time application is made and payment is received.
All participating students must attend the classroom sessions each week and must also drive each week. Driving sessions will depart from the rear of the High School at the West Gym entrance. Students are encouraged to advise the driving teacher of any accommodations needed to assist the student in learning to drive a vehicle. Students are contacted frequently through the Guilderland High School e-mail account regarding this program. Please make sure to check your account for any updates.
Again, the New York State requirement for attendance in Driver Education is extremely rigid. Students who fail to attend all classes and driving times will not receive their MV285.
Please Note: Students must pay at the time of application and be in possession of a current permit or license. Failure to do so will forfeit their enrollment in Driver Education.
