Update: May 5, 2020
A message from Guilderland High School Principal Michael Piscitelli:
Dear GHS Parents,
Finally hearing the announcement that school was closed for the rest of the school year was expected, but still extremely disappointing and sad. Now that the official proclamation has been made, it is important that we focus on making the best of a bad situation and continue to try to create positive memories for our graduating seniors There are several items that we are working on concurrently. Below are some preliminary plans, with the understanding that this work is ongoing and constantly changing.
Junior/Senior Awards Ceremony
I am working with the Counseling Department to finalize the senior scholarship awards by May 15th. Junior award selection is now complete. We plan to record a virtual Junior/Senior Awards ceremony towards the end of May. The ceremony will be broadcast in early June. The process of how scholarships will be delivered to students will need to be worked out.
Senior Yard Signs
The Senior Class officers and advisors decided to purchase yard signs for the senior class. The plan is to distribute these signs on May 29th. A schedule for the pickup and more details will be forthcoming.
Locker Cleanout, textbook return, personal items
We are working on a schedule for students to come to the high school to clean out their lockers and to return school materials. We need to develop a schedule that will limit the number of people so that social distancing guidelines can be upheld. We are looking to start scheduling these visits during the week of May 18th.
Yearbooks are expected to come in at the beginning of June. We will have to design a special pickup schedule for the books
Seniors Only Caps and gowns/Chromebook returns
We will schedule a time for Seniors to pick up their caps and gowns and any other items purchased through Jostens. We also would like to do Chromebook returns at the same time. Students should bring their Chromebook and charger to the school on the date selected. This will be scheduled closer to the end of the school year since students will need their Chromebooks. More details to come.
We are considering canceling our reservation at SEFCU soon because we do not believe a large gathering such as graduation will be allowed by June 27th. We feel we need to start making alternative plans. I have reserved a date at the Jericho Drive-In in Glenmont, for Saturday, June 20th. This venue is a possibility but we are also considering other venues. The ceremony could be a combination of live and taped events and we could incorporate some new, creative ideas. It is unknown at this time if the conferring of diplomas will be allowed.
As we are in the very beginning stages of making plans, and I want to hear parent and student feedback. I have created a thoughtexchange, an online forum, for you to share your ideas. Here’s the link to participate: https://my.thoughtexchange.com/106299798
As I said above, these plans are ongoing and things may change as we get additional information. We are going to do our best to make these events special and I appreciate your help in accomplishing this.
