June 23 update: class of 2023 commencement; community events; Butterfly Station; online safety; summer break

A message from Dr. Wiles:

Dear GCSD Families,

The past few days have been filled with many festivities: field days, friendship games, moving up ceremonies and, of course, graduation. The culmination of years of hard work, growth and perseverance, today’s graduation ceremony for the Guilderland High School Class of 2023 was a wonderful celebration full of music, joy and messages of kindness and inspiration. You can view the commencement ceremony on the GHS Media YouTube channel; please watch the Guilderland Central School District social media pages in the coming days for photos from the ceremony.

Visit the Community Quick Link for summer activities and event information

Several updates have been made to the Community Quick Link on the district website related to summer learning opportunities, activities and camps. One event listed is a design contest open to all Albany County K-12 students. The winning design will be distributed at polling places during the general election in November. Learn more on the Community Quick Link or by viewing the event flyer.

FMS Butterfly Station

A wonderful attraction to visit this summer is the Farnsworth Middle School Butterfly Station. Opening on July 13, this student-run, educational program has added evening hours on Wednesdays, from 5:30-8 p.m. To raise money for the program, now in its 25th year, the Butterfly Station is hosting an online apparel store that will be open until Wed., July 5. Please consider supporting the program and visiting this summer, especially for the butterfly release on Aug. 11.

Online safety

An aspect of the district’s initiative to encourage good digital citizenship, Securly is the filtering suite GCSD utilizes to protect students when using online technology on school-issued devices. The platform offers a home app that allows parents and/or guardians to monitor online activity on school-issued devices during non-school hours, including weekends and summer break. As a reminder, the district has guidelines to protect all students from harmful or inappropriate online content, as outlined in the Internet and Computer Acceptable Use Policy. Securly facilitates the adherence of these safeguards.

Report cards will be available on eSchoolData

Please check eSchoolData for your child’s fourth quarter grades. Report cards will be released on June 28 and will provide you with a snapshot of your child’s progress over the course of the year. In addition, watch for periodic updates over the summer in preparation for the 2023-24 school year.

As we turn the page on the 2022-23 school year, I would like to thank all of the students, staff and families for the contributions and endeavors that made this a productive and rewarding year.

I hope everyone has the opportunity to rest, relax and recharge; have a safe and enjoyable summer!

Sincerely,

Marie Wiles, Ph.D.
Superintendent
