A message from Dr. Wiles:

Dear GCSD Families,

Now that the calendar page has turned to May, we have entered a very busy season. In addition to year-end concerts, ceremonies and celebrations, we are also preparing for the next academic year. Please read on for information concerning a few items related to the 2024-25 school year.

DEI Committee recruiting new members; interest letters due May 6

This is a reminder that the Guilderland Central School District Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee is currently recruiting new members for its fifth year of work, which begins in September 2024. The purpose of the DEI Committee is to provide direction, support and oversight for the district’s work to become more diverse, equitable and inclusive through its policies, practices and programs. Letters of interest are due by 5 p.m. on May 6; please visit the district website to learn how to submit a letter. You can also find more information on the DEI page of the district’s website.

School budget vote is May 21

On May 21, Guilderland residents will vote on the proposed $125,192,817 budget for the 2024-25 school year, on three additional propositions and to elect three board of education members. The three propositions are:

  • to purchase maintenance vehicles and seven gas school buses at a total cost of $1,281,000
  • to purchase two electric school buses at no net cost to the district
  • to transfer the district’s one-room Cobblestone Schoolhouse to the Town of Guilderland

More information can be found about the 2024-25 budget and propositions on the district website.

Board of Education Meet the Candidates Night, May 6, 7 p.m.

On Monday, May 6, at 7 p.m., the Guilderland PTA Council is hosting Meet the Candidates Night. The in-person forum will be livestreamed on the GHS Media YouTube channel and will be recorded. Five candidates are running at-large to fill three seats on the GCSD Board of Education; candidates are elected to unpaid terms. In the order they will appear on the ballot, the candidates are: Tara Molloy-Grocki, Mateo Dunagan, Elizabeth Floyd Mair, Blanca Gonzalez-Parker and Nina Kaplan. Read the candidates’ profiles on the district website.

One candidate will serve a term that will begin on May 22, 2024, and end on June 30, 2027, to fill a vacancy created by the resignation of Board President Dr. Seema Rivera. This seat will be filled by the eligible candidate who receives the highest number of votes and is not an incumbent GCSD board of education member.

The remaining seats will be filled by the two candidates, regardless of whether or not they are incumbents, who receive the next two highest vote totals; their terms carry a three-year term beginning on July 1, 2024.

Public budget hearing will be held May 7, 7 p.m.

At the May 7 board of education meeting, GCSD will hold a public budget hearing. Assistant Superintendent for Business Dr. Andrew Van Alstyne will provide a presentation on the proposed spending plan for the 2024-25 school year. The budget hearing and board meeting will be held in the Large Group Instruction (LGI) room at Guilderland High School and is open to the public. The meeting will also be live-streamed and can be viewed on the GHS Media YouTube channel.

Upcoming voter registration dates

To vote in the school budget and board of education election, voters must meet eligibility requirements and be registered. If you are not registered with the school district or the county, you can register to vote with the Albany County Board of Elections or at the district on May 6 and May 8. For more details, visit the district website here.

Finally, I would like to ask our school community to join me in marking National School Nurse Day, Wednesday, May 8, and National Teacher Appreciation Week, May 6-10. These commemorations present an excellent time to express our sincerest gratitude for all that our teachers and school nurses do to support our students.

Thank you for your continued support of Guilderland Central School District students and our school community. I hope you have an enjoyable weekend.
