Superintendent’s letter to GCSD families regarding Lynnwood teacher

The following message was sent to LES families on Friday, Oct. 5, 2018:

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The Guilderland Police Department informed the school district this morning that Mr. Tod Mell, a math specialist at Lynnwood Elementary School, pleaded guilty in Guilderland Town Court last evening to a charge of endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor.  Mr. Mell has been on leave from his position since April 27, 2018, when the district was first informed of the investigation by the Albany County District Attorney’s office. We were advised by the District Attorney’s office that the charge follows an allegation of abuse that occurred at Lynnwood Elementary School during the 2010-2011 year, but was not reported until this past April.   As part of his plea, and upon sentencing, Mr. Mell will resign his position with the Guilderland Central School District. He will remain on leave until that time.

This circumstance is undoubtedly difficult for everyone. The safety and well-being of our students is our highest priority.  As always, please remember that we have counselors and social workers available to support our students if needed. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at 518-456-6200, ext. 3102.  Also, since we have not been directly involved in the investigation, you may wish to direct any inquiries to the Guilderland Police Department (518-356-1501) or the Office of the District Attorney (518-487-5460).
