On Thursday, October 20, 2022, U.S. Rep. Paul Tonko visited Farnsworth Middle School to deliver nearly $1,000 worth of books donated by the Library of Congress. The congressman represents the district in the U.S. House of Representatives.
FMS seventh grade teacher Lisa Ball applied for the donation through the Library of Congress’ Surplus Books Program, which the congressman’s office helped facilitate. The Library of Congress receives more books than it can house; through this program, surplus books are distributed to libraries around the country.
In addition to delivering the books, Rep. Tonko addressed the seventh grade students in attendance and spoke about the importance of books and the weight words carry. He answered their questions, covering a variety of topics including space exploration, global warming, the war in Ukraine, gun violence in schools, gas prices and how to make the country a better place. The students were curious about the congressman’s career, asking about his role in Washington D.C., and how he became a member of Congress.
Thank you to Rep. Tonko for supporting Guilderland schools and students!
