Closing and Delays

School closings, delayed openings and early dismissals resulting from weather conditions or other situations will be posted on the homepage of the school website. In addition to the homepage of the district website, individuals may also access school closing information via the social media sites and media outlets described below.

One Call Now

Parents and guardians of district students will also be notified of school closings and delays via the One Call Now telephone alert system. All GCSD parents with students currently registered in school have already been automatically entered into the One Call Now calling system based on contact information contained in the district’s student management system, SchoolTool. Parents do not need to sign up for this service.

School News Notifier

Individuals who have signed up for the School News Notifier service will receive closing and delay information via e-mail and/or text message. Please note: Due to the volume of closing notifications sent via the SNN service and precautions put in place by the recipient’s email server, these notifications may not be received immediately. We encourage you to check the district website and/or consult local media outlets—in addition to awaiting text or e-mail notification—to ensure that you and your child(ren) receive the information as soon as possible.

Facebook and/or Twitter

The district will also send out notice of school closings and delays via its Facebook and Twitter accounts. Not yet a friend or follower? Visit us on Facebook or Twitter today!

Morning closings may be announced as early as 5:30 a.m., but usually by 6:30 a.m. Whenever schools are closed for emergency reasons, continuing education classes and “PM School” for high school students will be cancelled that night.

Delayed openings mean all schedules will be delayed either one or two hours. Bus pickups will be approximately one or two hours later than the scheduled time. However, please continue to monitor all opening delays, as they could turn into school closings depending on the weather.

Early dismissals due to inclement weather

When the weather becomes inclement during the day and driving conditions become poor, please stay tuned to news about early dismissals through the methods discussed above. Please arrange for any changes in drop-off locations for students in the event of an emergency school closing in advance, if necessary. If you have not done so already, please contact your child’s individual school for more information on how to make these arrangements.

Early dismissals held due to inclement weather or other emergencies, will be scheduled as follows:

  • Elementary schools—2:05 p.m.
  • Guilderland High School—12 p.m.
  • Farnsworth Middle School—1 p.m.
  • All private and parochial students—12 p.m.

Please note: Y-Time at Guilderland Elementary School, Pine Bush Elementary School, and Westmere Elementary School will only be cancelled due to inclement weather conditions if the elementary schools are dismissed before 12 p.m. or if school is cancelled for the entire day. Y-Time will still run if after school and evening activities have been cancelled.
