This course begins where students left off in French 1. Students build upon their vocabulary and focus on the grammatical structures of language. This fast-paced course covers material from French 2 and French 3 in one year. Students are selected based on teacher recommendation during 8th grade. Students broaden their vocabulary through the use of more advanced grammatical structures. This course is taught in the target language.

This course is an intermediate college level course that requires students to use French to read, discuss and write about French and Francophone literature, film and current events. With the exception of complex grammar concepts, this course is taught in French and students are required to use French when addressing other students or the instructor. Students can choose to enroll in this course for four college credits through the University in High the School Program at SUNY Albany. ($160) (SUNY Albany Intermediate French 4 credits, AFRE 200). Financial assistance may be available for students who qualify for the free and reduced lunch program.

This course includes Spanish 2 and 3 curriculum and is taught at an accelerated pace. Students are placed by teacher recommendations and by performance in their classes in grade 8. Only the Spanish language will be used in class with special emphasis on reading, portfolio projects, compositions, skits, and the use of authentic materials and culture. Prior to the end of the year, teachers will recommend whether students will go into Spanish level 3 or 4.

This course is specially designed for non-native speakers of English who have been identified as English Language Learners (ELL) according to the state-approved identification assessment (the NYSITELL). Placement after the first year in the program will be based on NYSITELL scores. *Credit will be offered for up to two years in the same level.

4335 American Sign Language (ASL I)

Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12

ASL crosses over all groups of people and helps us to be more inclusive. Students will learn to communicate using ASL, while learning about: occupations that use signing, how to identify a home that is deaf-friendly, connect with deaf students through face-to-face and video communication, deaf sporting organizations, explore and analyze artwork by deaf artists, and much more. This is a silent class; all communication happens through sign.

4336 American Sign Language (ASL II)

Prerequisites: ASL I

This class is a continuation of ASL I. Students need to have completed ASL I in order to enroll. Students will advance their skills and become more fluent in their communication with members of the Deaf community. This is a silent class as students will communicate through sign. ASL II is mandatory for students who are working towards Checkpoint B completion for graduation.
