Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to FMS, Hiawatha House, and our team for the 2025-2026 school year. We are looking forward to meeting with you, showing you around FMS and making your 6th grade year a great one!
As we look to a new academic year, we are prepared to provide our students with quality education using a variety of forms. We will work together to develop a sense of community on our team. It is our belief that parents are the most important and influential adults in students’ lives. We believe that communication between the home and school is essential for a successful school year. If parents, teachers and students work together as a team then we can be successful. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have questions or concerns during the year.
Enclosed you will find a list of supplies that we would like you to have in school when we return on Tuesday, September, 8th, 2026. Please look at the list carefully as items are color coordinated to make them easier to find. Organization is an important step towards success in middle school.
In addition, listed below are some tasks we’d like you to complete:
Parents, we would appreciate it if you would send an email telling us about your child. After all, you know them better than anyone else. We are very interested in learning about your strengths, weaknesses, interests and any areas of concern you may have.
Students, we want to hear from you, too (A required homework assignment already ☺!!!) Send an email about yourself. Tell us what you’ve been doing, how you feel about starting at 6th grade at FMS, and anything else you would like us to know. Please email your letters to us. Summer reading Assignment
We ask all incoming 6th graders to read at least one book over the summer. During the first full week of school (beginning September 8th), students will complete a graded follow-up assignment based on their summer reading. To help with preparation, we recommend jotting down some notes while reading.

Enjoy these last few days of summer. Orientation is on Thursday, September 3rd, we can’t wait to meet you in person. Please only bring your chromebook and pencil for the orientation day. The first day of in-person instruction will be on Tuesday, September 8th. Please bring all of your supplies that day.

Student Lockers and Locks
FMS Students will be assigned two lockers – a hallway locker near their homeroom and one for Physical Education. Students will need to bring in two combination locks – one for their Homeroom Locker and one for their PE locker. Homeroom and Phys Ed teachers will keep the combination on file to help students who might forget the combination.
***PLEASE open the locks up BEFORE school and have students practice using them. Try to have the combination memorized BEFORE the start of school. Thank you!***

Math (Mrs. Margosian)
- I-30XIIS scientific calculator (this model will be used in 7th grade as well)
- 4 yellow folders with prongs (Does NOT need to clip in TEAM Binder.)
Science (Mrs. Margosian)
- 4 red folders with prongs (Does NOT need to clip in TEAM Binder.)
Language Arts & Social Studies (Ms. Boyce)
- ELA: 1 composition notebook (college ruled, any color/pattern), 1 blue folder, assignment notebook (Apad)
- $6.00 towards assignment notebook & homework folder
- SS: 1 Green 1½-inch binder, spiral notebook (college ruled, green if possible)
General Team Supplies
- Earbuds or headphones-that can be plugged into Chromebook.
- 1 box of tissues
- 1 box of colored pencils
- 1 box of thin markers
- 1 multi-pack highlighters
- 4 boxes of pencils w/erasers
- 2 dry erase markers
- Small pencil sharpener
- 1 pack of Post-It notes (any color)
- 4-5 Glue sticks
- 1 pair of scissors
- 1 package of loose leaf
- 3-ring Zipper Type Binder
This will be used as a TEAM binder to keep the Parent Communication folder and other important items organized.
- Pencil Pouch (hole punched to go inside Team Binder)
This will be used to help with organization and to hold pencils, scissors, erasers, glue sticks, etc.

Below is a list of items we would like students to keep in their zippered team binder at all times and bring with them to each class.

Hiawatha 6B
Dear Parents and Guardians:
We are happy to welcome your child to our team for the 2026-2027 school year. We hope your child will find the sixth grade year both exciting and challenging. We have created a list of supplies to help make your sale watching and shopping easier. Please take the time to review the list. Organization is an important step towards success in the classroom.
A book bag or backpack should be used to carry to and from school. It must be a size that can easily be stored in the locker during the day. It cannot be carried to, or stored, in classes. (Locker dimensions: w 12” x h 34” x d 13.5”)
All students should be prepared to do an assignment on a book they read during the summer. (Yes, they should be reading!) It can be any age appropriate book and genre. All students have to do is read the book before the first day of school. Students will also need to know the title, author, plot, and number of pages in the book. Please DO NOT write a summary of the book. Simply have the aforementioned information with you on the first week of school. This information will be used during the first weeks of school. Happy reading!
We would also love to know about our incoming class from those who know them best…their caregivers! Please feel free to write us a letter about your student. Include information you think is important for us to have. This could include information about learning styles, special interests, talents, and even fears your child may have regarding school. Below is a list of supplies that your child will need for sixth grade classes on the HIAWATHA 6B Team.
Please be sure that your child’s name and homeroom are written on each of the supplies. The school supplies listed below should be brought to school on the first full day at FMS, September 8th. A book bag should be used to carry items to and from school. It is okay if it takes a couple of days to get all supplies to school…no need to overload bags!
Please let us know of any supply hardships so we may be of assistance. We do have extra supplies if needed.
Hiawatha 6B Supply List
CORE CLASSES : (Math, Science, Social Studies, English Language Arts)
1) 1 3 inch large binder to use as a Team Binder (It can be the zipper kind but it DOESN’T have to be. As long as the system works for your student– meaning they are prepared for classes with the supplies needed daily – use whatever system works for them and your family’s budget!)
2) 1 composition notebook ( for LA)
3) 1 Yellow one-subject notebook (for Science)
4) 4 pocket folders (A sturdy kind (no interior prongs please) with holes to go in a binder are best. Different colors/patterns are helpful if you can find them-)
- Science class – Yellow
- Math class – Red
- Social Studies & Language Arts classes (1 folder)- Blue
- Take Home folder – a color other than the CORE colors please
5) pencil pouch (zipper pouch with holes – not a hard plastic case, please)
6) 1-2 packages of #2 pencils (Wood pencils are preferred.) Being prepared for class with a pencil daily is key!!
7) 1 package of 12 colored pencils
8) 2 Highlighter Pens (any color)
9) wired headphones (1 set to keep in pencil pouch –used for ALL CLASSES at school)
10) Scientific calculator (Model TI-30XIIS – used in 7th and 8th grade too.)
11) 1 combination lock standard size – not luggage /small size ( for the hallway locker)
**Please also provide $12.00 (cash or check payable to FMS) for an Assignment Notebook, Scholastic News Magazine (20 issues) Subscription, and team organizational supplies. Place the money in an envelope or baggie labeled with the student’s full name. The resources will be used daily to build a home-school connection, keep up on current events, and grow organizational & time management skills. Thank you!
6th Grade ENL/ELL Students:
Current ENL/ELL Students will need: a ½ inch binder, a pocket folder, box of tissues & a composition notebook
Other helpful supplies (optional)
1) Large box or 2 of tissues (With allergies and colds and over 50 students- we go through them fast!)
2) pens with blue or black ink (5-6 pens are plenty)
Students will carry their pencil pouch with writing utensils & coloring supplies as needed to classes.

Hiawatha 7A
Dear Families,
Welcome to Hiawatha 7A! We are looking forward to meeting you and working with your child. We have compiled a list of materials that your student will need for all subject areas so that your student is prepared for the first day of school. Please make sure that all of your student’s supplies are clearly labeled with their first & last name. If you have any of the supplies listed left-over from previous years, those are fine to use this year!
Hiawatha 7A Supply List
Homeroom:
- 4 boxes of tissues
- 1 combination lock
- This will be used for your child’s locker that will be located near their assigned homeroom class.
Hiawatha 7A Classes:
- 3x two-pocket folders (Take Home Folder, Language Arts Folder & Social Studies Folder)
- 3x composition notebooks (Language Arts, Social Studies, & Science)
- 2x 2-inch binders (Math & Science)
- Dry Erase Markers (Math & Science)
- 1x pack of at least 6 dividers (Math)
- 1x calculator: Texas Instrument – TI – 30X II S (Math)
- Pencils (Will need to be replenished throughout the year)
- 2x pack of highlighters (LA and Social Studies)
- 2x pack of post-it notes, 3×3 size (LA)
- Wired headphones
- These will need to be replaced if lost or broken because they will be used in most classes.

Important Chromebook, Locker & Backpack Information:
- All returning 7th grade students were given a Chromebook last year. Please bring this Chromebook to school on the 1st day & make sure that it is fully charged.
- Students are not allowed to use backpacks at FMS during the school day. All materials & supplies will need to be stored in your Hiawatha locker.

Important Locker and Backpack Information
- All 8th-grade students will need a combination or a number lock for their locker.
- Backpacks – Students will not be allowed to use backpacks during the school day. All materials and supplies will need to be kept in their locker.
Hiawatha 8A Supply List
We realize that many families like to shop for school supplies when they are on sale in August, so we have compiled a list of items you will need for your classes. Please have the following supplies on the first day of school so that we can organize our materials together. Some items may need to be replenished as the year goes on.
- 1 zippered pencil holder for all classes
- 2 three-ring binders: 2 inches for Science 8/Math8/Algebra and Science 8/Biology
- 10 tab dividers for Math 8/Algebra (5) and Science 8/Biology (5)
- 1 package erasers (latex free) for all classes
- 1 scientific calculator: TI-30x IIS for Science 8/Bio/Math 8 ***see below***
- 1 graphing calculator: TI-84 1 for Algebra only **see below**
- 2 packages highlighters (multicolored) for all classes
- 2-Pocket folders (any brand/color) 3 ELA and Social Studies
- 1 pkg of 24 (minimum) – #2 pre-sharpened pencils Homeroom
- 12- #2 pencils All classes
- 2 pkgs of 24+Colored pencils All classes
- 2 pkgs 12+ Markers (any brand/style) All Classes

If you are able and willing to donate, we are always in need of pencils, colored pencils, markers, and tissues. They disappear so quickly. Thank you in advance!
***We would like to strongly suggest that you purchase the TI-30X IIS scientific calculator for your student for use in both math and science classes. This is the same calculator as students used in 7th grade. Calculators will be available during math class time, but we cannot send calculators home with students. The NYS mathematics test for 8th graders allows the use of a calculator on the entire exam, and we feel it is important for each student to have his/her own calculator for math and science, especially for home use. We will be doing in-class calculator lessons with the students using only this particular model and it would be most beneficial to the students if they were able to follow these classroom instructions. This model allows the user to see what has been entered on the display screen and scroll back into prior work.
***For algebra students, we would like to strongly suggest that you purchase the TI-84 Plus graphing calculator for students to use in math class. Calculators will be available during math class time, but we cannot send calculators home with students. The NYS Algebra Regents exam for 8th graders allows the use of a calculator on the entire exam, and we feel it is important for each student to have his/her own calculator for math, especially for home use. Many of the topics covered in algebra will require the use of the graphing calculator. We will be doing in-class calculator lessons with the students using only this particular model and it would be most beneficial to the students if they were able to follow these classroom instructions. This model allows the user to see what has been entered on the display screen and scroll back into prior work.
Students are allowed to have a different calculator, but it will be their responsibility to keep their owner’s manual and learn how to use their own calculator.
