Rai, Sheng and Burnash named Dutchmen of the Week for May 18

Each week, we highlight two student-athletes (modified, mod 9, frosh, JV or varsity level) for athletic accomplishments based on the following criteria:

  • The athlete should have made a significant impact on a contest within the nomination time frame, which is the week prior to selection; or
  • The athlete must have shown excellent leadership, sportsmanship, noticeable improvement or effort, community service, and/or other notable traits.

Congratulations to Rajeev Rai (Varsity Tennis), Roger Sheng (Varsity Tennis) and Lauren Burnash (Varsity Track & Field) for earning DOW (Dutchmen of the Week) honors for the week of May 18th.

Rajeev Rai & Roger Sheng (Varsity Tennis)

Guilderland’s Rajeev Rai and Roger Sheng both advanced to the Section 2 individual singles tennis championship in May, where they faced each other in the final. The tournament included 56 players from across the Capital District.

Rai won the match to complete an undefeated season and earn the Section 2 title. Both Rai and Sheng have qualified for the New York State tournament at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing.

Lauren Burnash (Varsity Track & Field)

Lauren delivered a standout performance at the Suburban Council Championship meet on Wednesday, achieving a feat unmatched in program history.

She won all three sprint events (a rare accomplishment given the limited recovery time between races) and set a new school record in the 400-meter dash. With her time, Lauren also became the first outdoor track athlete in program history to break 56 seconds in the event.

Between races, she supported teammates and encouraged fellow competitors.
