Continuing education courses are open to all persons in the Capital District age 16 and older unless otherwise stated. When possible, priority is given to residents of the Guilderland Central School District in courses where the demand is great and facilities limited.

Course descriptions

Basket Weaving

Basket makers of all levels are welcome. This is a good class if you’re new to basket weaving, need a refresher course if it’s been a while or just want a reason to weave again. New students will complete 4 baskets while learning the basics of traditional basket weaving. Basket making materials will be supplied by the instructor for an additional fee. Materials fee for new students will be $40 payable to the instructor at the first session. Time permitting additional baskets can be made on a cost per basket basis. Returning weavers will continue with baskets of their choice. Materials fee for returning students will be determined at the first session. The following items will be needed at the first session: tub for soaking reeds (at least 12” by 12” by 6” deep), old bath towel, pencil, ruler, cloth tape measure, utility knife, awl or ice pick, kitchen scissors, heavy duty spring type clothes pins, 4” cable ties, and spray bottle.

This beginner course will focus on the basics of golf: the grip, swing, rules, etiquette and more. There will be a lot of practice time and chances to begin playing a hole or two each night. Participants must bring their own clubs. This course is only open to those who have never taken Beginner Golf before.

Beginner Japanese

Are you interested in traveling to Japan? Do you do business with Japanese nationals? Have you wanted a new (and fun) challenge? Well, here is your opportunity! This course will cover the basics of Japanese conversation and introduce the writing system. Topics include greetings, asking directions, describing weather, restaurant ordering, colors and making basic statements. All this will be done through games, the use of visual tools and role playing.

Injury Prevention for Runners and Walkers

Who’s ready to trade in the treadmill for sidewalks and trails? Whether you walk recreationally or are looking to be a more competitive runner, everyone can benefit from learning strategies to prevent injury. This course will cover risk factors of common running related injuries, the importance of proper warm up and cool down, as well as the use of different recovery tools. Come learn basic stretches and exercises that can help prevent and manage shin splints, plantar fasciitis, knee and hip pain. This class is for runners, joggers and walkers of all experience and fitness levels. Participants should bring a yoga mat or blanket to sit/lay on, as well as a rope, belt or strap to use for stretching.

Gentle Flow Yoga

This Gentle Flow Yoga class is great for all fitness levels and ages, especially those new to yoga and anyone with injuries. Each class focuses on stretching, coordination of breath with movement and attention to alignment. Class ends with deep relaxation to release tension and stress. Introduction to Healthy Home Cooking and Living Series

Did you know that the most common health problems today are mostly preventable and/or reversible with a healthy diet and lifestyle? Are you eating poorly because you don’t have time to cook or because you simply don’t have the skills to cook or know what to cook? Are you confused about which foods are healthy and which exercise is best? This mostly hands on healthy cooking and living series will cover the basics and how-to’s of healthy cooking, how to use those amazing kitchen machines you received as gifts and never took out of the box, how to integrate self-care in your daily routine, basic nutrition information regarding fats, oils, sugars, sweeteners and fiber as well as grocery store navigation and tips on how to eat healthy on a budget. Food, handouts and samples will be provided by the instructor for an additional fee. Materials fee will be $50 per student payable at the first session. The following items are required for each session: chef’s knife, paring knife, flexible cutting board, kitchen apron or old shirt that can get dirty, clean kitchen towel, an open mind to trying new foods/flavors/ideas, this is a fun class! Taught by experienced certified instructors of the Guilderland Police Department, students will learn how to access and defend themselves when faced with an unsafe encounter. The course includes lecture, discussion and self defense techniques suitable for women of all ages and abilities. If you have ever considered taking a self defense class, now is the time to do it. Gain new skills, friends and the confidence to protect yourself in any situation.
