Guilderland High School physical education teacher and coach Allison Relyea has been named the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AHPERD) Professional of the Year.
This prestigious honor recognizes exceptional educators and administrators who demonstrate outstanding service, innovative teaching and leadership in health, physical education, recreation, and dance across New York state. The award is presented to professionals who are leaders in their field, have made significant long term contributions to their schools and communities, and have shown a sustained commitment to NYS AHPERD through active membership and service.
For more than two decades, Relyea has served the Guilderland Central School District as an exceptional teacher and coach, making a lasting impact on countless students, athletes and colleagues. She has been recognized multiple times by NYS AHPERD for her advocacy on behalf for students, her work building knowledge and confidence, and her emphasis on collaboration, teamwork and social and personal responsibility. In addition to these awards, she was honored in 2023 by Special Olympics New York for leading the development of the unified sports program at GHS, which brings together students with and without intellectual disabilities for physical education and athletic opportunities.
“[Allison] brings an unwavering passion to everything she does,” said Director of Health, PE & Athletics Dave Austin. “She continually seeks to enhance the student experience and introduce initiatives that foster connection and strengthen the school community.”
Relyea’s influence reaches far beyond the gymnasium and her commitment to excellence reflects the very best of Guilderland.
The district is proud of Relyea and grateful for the leadership, dedication and care she brings to the Guilderland school community.
