April 25: Update on technical interruptions at GCSD

Specialists working with the GCSD to investigate the technical interruptions that occurred last Thursday have determined that the district was the victim of a cyber attack by a threat actor group which used malware to encrypt certain systems throughout the district.

The district is working diligently with specialists to investigate the incident, confirm its impact on our systems, and to restore full functionality as quickly as possible. Law enforcement and all other appropriate authorities were immediately notified.

The district is also actively investigating to determine whether any sensitive data may have been impacted. At this time, they have not confirmed that any sensitive data was compromised, but plan to keep the community updated as more information becomes available.

Important reminders for families:

At this time, all students in grades 7-12 will be remote on Monday, April 26. The goal is to restore internet access for Tuesday. Families should anticipate communication regarding the plan for Tuesday sometime tomorrow (April 26).

Chromebooks and iPads

It is safe to continue using school issued Chromebooks and iPads, as these devices were not impacted.

Report Cards

Middle and High School students’ report cards will be available in eSchoolData tomorrow, Monday, April 26. Elementary students’ report cards will be available on Tuesday, April 27.

State Testing for Remote Students

Because of limited internet capacity this week, the option for remote only students to sit for the state assessments in ELA and Math will no longer be offered. The district regrets this inconvenience and is hopeful that the ELA exam for  in-person students will still be administered on Wednesday and Thursday, as planned. More information regarding state assessments is forthcoming.

The district will continue to keep families informed as the details of this investigation continue to unfold. The technology team has been working nonstop to restore the system to full functionality and the goal is to restore internet access for Tuesday.
