In May, five accomplished Guilderland High School student-musicians, who comprise the GHS Brass Quintet, performed at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center in the 41st annual Young Musicians Concert. Organized by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Young Musicians Concert is a showcase of talented high school chamber ensembles from the tri-state area.
These ensembles are selected through a rigorous competition and mentorship program, culminating in a performance at Alice Tully Hall. To participate in this prestigious opportunity, the GHS student-musicians passed multiple rounds of performances, including a video submission round and a live regional concert. This year, 15 ensembles with 55 musicians were featured, chosen from nearly 200 applicants.

While the GHS students were supported by music teacher John Fatuzzo in recording their initial audition, completing the application process and managing logistics, the students maintained full ownership of the musical aspect of the project. Their performances were executed without a conductor — or sheet music — and their rehearsals were entirely student-centered and student-led. This process demanded a high level of independence and mastery of some of the most advanced standards in music education.
Congratulations to Yoonsoo (Sam) Woo (trumpet), Toby Weiss (trumpet), Brendon Cao (trombone), Anthony Padula (french horn) and Ian Dunn (tuba) on this impressive accomplishment! Watch the performance of the Young Musicians Concert at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center here.
