Acclaimed children’s musician Red Grammer brought music, movement and messages of kindness during a recent performance at Lynnwood Elementary School.
Grammer has shared a connection with the Lynnwood community since the early 1990s, when the school began using his music to reinforce themes of kindness, friendship, acceptance and tolerance. His songs remain a fixture at school events, including assemblies, morning meetings, performances and “Share and Celebrate” gatherings. Lynnwood retirees, who may have first heard his music on cassette tapes and CDs, are honored each year with a rendition of “I think you’re wonderful!”
Lynnwood students responded enthusiastically to the concert, singing and signing along throughout the performance. One especially memorable moment came when Grammer played the opening notes of “Teaching Peace.” Students immediately joined in, performing the song’s sign-language motions together; a scene that captured the sense of joy and unity Lynnwood strives to foster.
Retiring second-grade teacher Chris White made a surprise appearance on stage after Grammer invited her to join him during the performance. White, who will retire in June after 35 years at Lynnwood, was met with smiles from students and staff who associate Grammer’s music with the school’s long-standing traditions.
The performance was designed to engage a wide range of learners, incorporating multiple languages, sign language, dance and audience participation. At one point, Grammer invited student volunteers to help write verses to his song “Down by the Sea.” Red’s visit also reinforced many of the character traits emphasized at Lynnwood, including kindness, appreciation for others and an “other people matter” mindset.
“Red Grammer’s performance beautifully captured the power of music and song,” said music teacher Michelle Jantson. “Coming together as a school to sing about friendship, kindness, honesty, integrity and peace–the very character traits we strive to nurture in our students–was truly moving.”
Best known for his landmark recording Teaching Peace, Grammer has earned Grammy and Parents’ Choice honors during a career that spans decades. His music continues to connect with and inspire audiences of all ages.
