Oct. 3 update: Listening, learning, and looking ahead

Dear GCSD families,

October is here, bringing new opportunities for learning and connection. As we look ahead, I want to share a few important updates with you.

Share your voice in our ThoughtExchange, open through Oct. 15
Since joining the district in August, I have had the privilege of meeting many students, families, teachers, staff, and community members. I’ve seen firsthand the pride and care that make Guilderland such a special place. As I continue to learn and grow in this role, I want to hear directly from you about what matters most for our schools.

That’s why we’re inviting you to join our districtwide ThoughtExchange. I’ll be listening closely for your thoughts in areas such as:

  • What do you believe are the greatest strengths of our schools that we should maintain or build upon?
  • What challenges do you see that we can work to improve?
  • What opportunities can we pursue to innovate and better serve our students and families?
  • What factors outside our schools might affect our ability to meet our goals?

The exchange will be open through Wednesday, Oct. 15. I encourage you to join the conversation today and return often to rate new ideas shared by others: Join the ThoughtExchange.

An update from the GCSD Technology Department: Introducing AI learning tools in our classrooms
The GCSD Technology Department is introducing MagicSchool AI, a teacher-guided platform that personalizes learning and helps students engage more deeply while building critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Students will use the MagicStudent tool with clear guardrails, including a required lesson on AI ethics. Teacher training and district guidelines ensure responsible use, prioritizing safety, privacy, and critical thinking. You can read more about integrating AI tools in our classrooms here.

StudentSquare invitations
Today, students in grades 6-12 received a reminder about StudentSquare, a vital communication tool for the school year. This platform enables students to receive important updates from teachers, club advisors, and coaches. Please encourage your child to log in and use this resource to stay connected.

Community Announcements
A reminder to check the Community Announcements page on our district website. This resource highlights learning and recreational opportunities offered by local organizations for GCSD students and families. The page is updated regularly, so be sure to check back often.

I’m grateful for the chance to listen, learn and grow alongside this school community. These first weeks have set a positive tone, and I’m excited about the opportunities ahead.

Sincerely,

Daniel Mayberry
Superintendent of Schools
