SchoolMessenger information for community members

SchoolMessenger is a way to receive email news from the district and its schools.

The district began utilizing SchoolMessenger in the 2018-19 school year for emergency notifications, such as school closings/delays and emergency situations in schools and has since expanded its use to include school and district-level messages.

The district is a central hub of activity in the community, particularly as it relates to educational and recreational opportunities available to children. This Community Announcements section is provided as a service to parents for informational purposes only. Programs listed are not necessarily affiliated with nor endorsed by the Guilderland Central School District. For more information about the activities and organizations listed below, please use the contact information provided with each entry.

Sundae on the Farm, September 19, 12-4 p.m.

The Montgomery County Farm Bureau presents Sundae on the Farm on Sunday, September 19, 12-4 p.m. at Ridgedale Farm, 164 Maring Road, Sharon Springs. Featuring free ice cream sundaes, horse drawn wagon rides, free children’s games, food booths and farmer’s markets, this event gives students the opportunity to experience hands-on farm life. STEAMwhiz Fall Session: BioChemistry — the Molecule of Life

STEAMwhiz Academy is offering an in-person, hands-on session this fall, entitled BioChemistry — The Molecule of Life that will empower students, ages 7-15, to become critical and analytical thinkers and doers.

National Night Out and Drive-Up YMCA Food Drive, August 3, 2021, 6-9 p.m.

Presented by the Guilderland Police Department Community Services Unit, National Night Out will be held on August 3, 6-9 p.m. at Tawasentha Park.  Featuring food, games, live music and a petting zoo, this event is free to all. Learn more about National Night Out here.

The Guilderland YMCA will be holding a Drive-Up Food Drive to benefit the Guilderland Food Pantry at National Night Out. Please bring a non-perishable food item to the event or drop off items at the Guilderland YMCA, 250 Winding Brook Drive, Guilderland. FMS Butterfly Station Program, July 21-August 12

The Butterfly Station at Farnsworth Middle School will be open this summer, July 21 – August 12, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Guided tours are conducted daily, with the last tour beginning at 12:30 p.m., and include the butterfly garden, the metamorphosis room and the butterfly catching adventure. Join us on Friday, August 13 at 11 a.m., for the Butterfly Release Celebration, as we release the butterflies into the wild!

Free to all visitors, the Butterfly Station is a student-run, community service program designed to educate about the Albany Pine Bush Preserve and the importance of butterflies to our local habitat.

Because the Butterfly Station is located inside FMS, face masks are required for the indoor portion of the tour. For more information, click here.

Life Kids Guilderland Summer Camps 

Life Kids Guilderland is offering a full-summer program, Monday-Friday, 7:30 am to 5:30 pm. Learn more about their summer camps and year-round programs here.

Capital Region Boot Camp Summer Camps, August 23-27; August 30-September 3

UAlbany Danes Soccer Academy 2021 Summer Camps 

The University of Albany Men’s Soccer Staff is hosting two soccer academy camps; a half-day co-ed camp for ages 6-13, July 19-23, and an Academy Training Center camp for boys ages 12-14, July 19-22. For more information and to register, visit www.danesoccer.com.

Summer Youth Running Club, June 30- September 1

The Wildcats Running Club is holding a new summer program for students to return to running. Every Wednesday, 6:30-7:30 pm, June 30-September 1, the club will hold weekly runs, starting from different parts of the Albany Rail Trail. Each weekly run will be limited to 25 students in third, fourth and fifth grades, and will follow New York State COVID-19 guidelines.

This summer run program will combine the basics of running with the fun of being a kid that will build a solid foundation for your student to use in other athletic endeavors. The Wildcats Running Club will be instructed by local long distance runner, Coach Tom O’Grady. Coach O’Grady holds a USA Track & Field Level 1 Certification as well as a National Academy of Sports Medicine Personal Trainer Certification.

To secure your spot in this ten-week program, with two weeks being held virtually, please email wildcatsrunning@gmail.com with the subject line  Summer Run Program. After your spot is secure, you will be contacted for payment. Registration costs for the complete 10 weeks is $130 (with discount for multiple family members). Space is limited to the first 25 students.

Albany Pine Bush Preserve Lupine Fest starts May 15

Witness the magic of spring with the Albany Pine Bush Preserve’s 17th annual Lupine Fest! Fields of violet Lupine flowers and fluttering Karner blue butterflies set the stage for visitors to explore and support the Albany Pine Bush Preserve and its partners through online interactive programs and limited in-person activities. Website visitors can access online resources to enjoy solitary nature walks, hands-on activities with community partners, music, games, crafts and more! Nearly 100 programs offered by the Parks and Recreation Department, including sporting activities, swimming and swim lessons, day camps, hobbies, fitness options, and cultural and historical special events.

Virtual Camp Invention, August 9-13, 2021

In partnership with the National Inventors Hall of Fame® (NIHF), Guilderland Central School District is pleased to offer the nationally acclaimed Camp Invention® program to children entering first through sixth grade this fall. This exciting, weeklong summer adventure provides opportunities for open-ended exploration of science, technology, engineering and more! Children rotate through various hands-on activities each day to think creatively and invent their own solutions to real-world challenges.

The week begins on August 9, with Katie McNally returning as Director. The 2021 program lineup is the best yet, so whether a child is a new or returning camper, they are in for an amazing week full of discoveries and a-ha moments!

This year, Camp Invention Guilderland will be virtual. Activity kits will be delivered directly to you, and a local educator will lead daily virtual sessions from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Campers will have everything they need for an amazing week of STEM fun!

GHS Weekend Backpack Program, Annual Fundraiser

A program that runs from October through June that supplements nutrition for students in need on the weekends when school meals are not available.

Fordham University Summer Reading Skills Programs

This summer, help your child become a confident, enthusiastic reader in the Summer Reading Skills Programs, offered through Fordham School of Professional and Continuing Studies and taught by instructors from the Institute of Reading Development. Learn more here.

Drama Kids Programs

In-person and online classes are fun, engaging, and filled with activities that will grow your child’s acting abilities, and help them develop the life skills they’ll need to navigate the changing world we live in.

Drama Kids is committed to safely reopening live classes in Guilderland, Colonie, Delmar & Clifton Park. Class size is limited and taught under federally-approved COVID-19 guidelines.

Guilderland Central School District Scholarship Fund
