District mourns the passing of twelfth-grade student

A message from Dr. Wiles:

Dear GCSD Families,

It is with tremendous sadness and heartache that I must inform you of a loss to the Guilderland High School community. Today, Sunday, March 27, Megi Hamza, an 18-year old senior, passed away as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident that occured on the Northway.

Megi will be remembered as warm and friendly, with a sweet disposition. Always positive and smiling, she lit up any room she was in. Many students were fortunate to call Megi their friend. She touched many lives at GHS and will truly be missed.

It is extremely difficult to face the death of a young person. Tomorrow, GCSD school psychologists, counselors and social workers will be available in the Large Group Instruction (LGI) room at GHS to provide counseling and support to students and staff members. Students who would like to speak to someone in a more private setting should contact their school counselor or ask any staff member for help.

I encourage families to talk with their children as they may have questions and worries about this loss. Discussing thoughts and feelings is important in helping your child work through grief. We have included some resources that may be helpful as you discuss Megi’s death. Please feel free to contact Guilderland High School Principal Michael Piscitelli at 518-861-8591 if you need additional assistance.

We extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to Megi’s family and friends.

Sincerely,

Marie Wiles, Ph.D.
