GCSD Phased Reopening of Schools for Students

The Guilderland Central School District reopening of schools for the 2020-21 school year will include phased reopening days for the first week of school, the week of September 7, 2020. This means that all students will participate via remote-only for half days with the exception of some in-person activities for students in Kindergarten, grade 5, grade 6, grade 8 and grade 9.

Below is information about phased reopening days. Please note some of this information is subject to change.


Week of August 31, 2020

  • Monday, August 31: Schools Closed
  • Tuesday, September 1 – Thursday, September 3: Superintendent’s Conference Days. No school for students. Staff to report for planning, preparation, training and professional development.
  • Friday, September 4: No school for students. No staff required to report.

Week of September 7, 2020

Transportation will be provided for the students in grades 5-9 participating in the in-person activities. Kindergarten students will be accompanied by their parents/guardians. 

Meals for remote students will be available for pick up on Tuesday, September 8, and will cover all four days of remote learning. Please contact Megan Beck, GCSD Food Services Director at beckm@guilderlandschools.net if you are interested in ordering meals for the week of phased reopening.

Students who will be participating in orientations have received information from their schools. Please contact your building principal with any questions or if you do not receive information about orientation.

 

  • Monday, September 7: Labor Day. No School for students or staff.
  • Tuesday, September 8: Meal pick-up for remote students. All students remote-only half days except:
    • Kindergarten: Gradual entry.
    • Grade 5 Orientation for AES and LES. All others remote.
    • Grade 6 Orientation for Hiawatha. All others remote.
    • Grade 8 Remote Only, A-Day Schedule.
    • Grade 9 Group 1. All others remote. Shortened schedule.
  • Wednesday, September 9: All students remote-only except:
    • Kindergarten: Gradual entry.
    • Grade 5 Orientation for GES. All others remote.
    • Grade 6 Orientation for Mohawk. All others remote.
    • Grade 8 Remote Only, B-Day Schedule.
    • Grade 9 Group 2. All others remote. Shortened schedule.
  • Thursday, September 10: All students remote-only except:
    • Kindergarten: Gradual entry.
    • Grade 5 Orientation for PBES. All others remote.
    • Grade 6 Orientation for Tawasentha. All others remote.
    • Grade 8: Group 1 in-person. All others remote. C-Day Schedule. Shortened schedule.
    • Grade 9 Group 1. All others remote. Shortened schedule.
  • Friday, September 11: All students remote-only except:
    • Kindergarten: Gradual entry.
    • Grade 5 Orientation for WES. All others remote.
    • Grade 6 Orientation for Seneca. All others remote.
    • Grade 8 Group 2 in-person. All others remote. D-day Schedule. Shortened schedule.
    • Grade 9 Group 2. All others remote. Shortened schedule.

Week of September 14

Regular schedules begin.

  • Grades K-2, in person: 7:30 a.m. – 1:45 p.m.
  • Grades 3-4, in person: 8:15 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
  • Grades 5-6, in person: 9:00 a.m. – 3:15 p.m.
  • Grade 7, hybrid: 10:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Half of the grade in person, half remote on an every other day schedule.
  • Grades 8-12, hybrid: 10:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Half of the grade in person, half remote on an every other day schedule.
  • Remote-only students.

Remote Learning Activities and Focus Areas

During this phased reopening time, remote learning activities and focus areas by grade are as follows.

Kindergarten-Grade 4

Classroom Teachers will schedule online Google Meets to:

  • Build community and relationships with all students (those who will be remote and those who will be in-person)
  • Review class expectations
  • Teach students about routines, procedures and technologies/platforms to be used to facilitate instruction (e.g., Seesaw)
  • Review new health and safety protocols and expectations for in-class learning
  • Teach about Covid-19 using developmentally appropriate resources (e.g., Brainpop)
  • Teachers will initiate communication plans with parents
  • Sessions should include opportunities for special area teachers to introduce themselves and provide a general overview of expectations, tools, etc.
  • Building Principals will schedule grade level assemblies using Google Meets

Grades 5-7

In addition to in-person orientation sessions for grades 5 and 6 scheduled by FMS Principal, Teachers will schedule online Google Meets to:

  • Build community and relationships with all students (those who will be remote and those who will be in-person)
  • Review class expectations
  • Teach students about routines, procedures and technologies/platforms to be used to facilitate instruction (e.g., Google Meet, Seesaw)
  • Review new health and safety protocols and expectations for in-class learning
  • Teach about Covid-19 using developmentally appropriate resources
  • Teachers will initiate communication plans with parents
  • Sessions should include opportunities for special area teachers to introduce themselves and provide a general overview of expectations, tools, etc.

Grades 8-12

In addition to in-person orientation sessions for grades 8 and 9 scheduled by GHS Principal, Teachers will schedule online Google Meets to:
