Important message about Texas shooting

A message from Dr. Wiles:

Dear GCSD Families,

It is with profound sadness that I write to you once again after another school shooting. This senseless act of violence in Texas, so soon after an equally disturbing shooting in Buffalo, is extremely traumatizing and painfully difficult to comprehend, for adults and children alike.

Whenever there is school violence, it can cause fear, anxiety and worry for students, staff and families – and may lead to many questions. GCSD psychologists, counselors and social workers are always available to assist a student who needs support. It’s important our students know the Guilderland Central School District is here to take care of them and that any adult in our school buildings will help them. Also, included below are some resources that may help families approach this topic in an age-appropriate manner to help you reassure and comfort your children, if they have questions.

It is important to stress to your child that Guilderland schools are safe places. We recognize there is no simple answer to school safety, however the district is fully committed to the well-being of our students and staff. Our comprehensive approach to safety includes building improvements, secured entrances, school safety teams and consistent training and drills. In addition, GCSD works collaboratively and in partnership with local law enforcement.

Finally, please remember to afford yourself the same care and compassion we show our children. We are grief stricken and we are angry, there’s no denying that. There is no age limit to the effects of such traumatic events.

The Guilderland community is a strong one; united we send our condolences and thoughts to the families of Uvalde, Texas.

Sincerely,

Marie Wiles, Ph.D
Superintendent
