May Young Artists of the Month

Each month, the art teachers from Altamont Elementary, Guilderland Elementary, Lynnwood Elementary and Westmere Elementary highlight students who have demonstrated they are practicing Studio Habits of Mind. These eight habits – develop craft, engage and persist, envision, express, observe, reflect, stretch and explore, and understand art worlds – encourage and enable students to be more mindful during the creative process. This is not a contest; the Young Artist of the Month accomplishment acknowledges specific learning and critical thinking that happens in the art room, in relation to Studio Habits of Mind. The students’ pictures and statements are framed and hung in the schools’ entryways.

Altamont Elementary is proud to recognize Arya Guettler in Ms. Gould’s third grade class as our Young Artist of the Month! She demonstrated the Studio Habit of Mind Stretch and Explore by taking creative risks, trying new techniques, and pushing the boundaries of her imagination. Arya’s curiosity and willingness to experiment have truly stood out in the art room. Her dedication reminds us all that growth comes from stepping outside our comfort zones. Great job Arya!

The Guilderland Elementary Young Artist of the Month is Emmie Burns in Mrs. Meddaugh’s first grade class. During art, Emmie has exhibited the Artist Habit of Mind: OBSERVE. That means she can look closely at the world around her and apply her observations to her work. Emmie consistently does her best to apply what she sees and knows to her artwork. She listens carefully to directions and always puts 100% effort into her work. Emmie’s love for art and the art making process shows in her artwork. She is focused on her work and eager to learn new skills and try new materials. Keep up the awesome work Emmie!

Lynnwood Elementary: Autumn Clements

The Lynnwood Young Artist for the month of May is Autumn Clements. Autumn is in Ms. Ander’s class first grade class and embodies the Studio Habits of Mind; Observe. To observe means to look closely and notice details with all your senses. During our Under the Sea project Autumn observed photographs of life on the coral reef and used all the details she noticed to create a very carefully drawn and sculpted diorama. First she drew her background and worked so neatly and carefully that Mrs. Gillis mixed it up with her own! Then she carefully built her corals into the correct shapes and added texture to each to make it look realistic. She also took her time to neatly paint them the correct colors of the real life corals she was observing. Great work Autumn!

Westmere Elementary: Violet Tramontano

The Westmere Elementary Young Artist of the Month is Violet Tramontano. Violet is a fifth grade student in Mrs. Deso’s class. She has demonstrated the
Studio Habit of Mind: Express. When asked what art means to her Violet said, “I love art because you can express yourself creatively. You can turn just about anything into art…even scribbles! Art gives you the chance to bring something new into the world that never would have existed before you made it.” Violet puts a lot of thought and care into her work and she helps to spread kindness during art class. Very nice job, Violet!
