Superintendent’s Letter: Preliminary Plans and Livestream Panel Discussion, July 23, 2020

Please see an update on reopening plans from Superintendent Dr. Marie Wiles:

Dear GCSD Families,

It has been nearly one week since we received guidance from the state about reopening plans which are due by July 31. Close to 120 people on our Reopening Steering Committee and subcommittees have been meeting regularly for several weeks to think through the many elements of reopening school in the midst of a pandemic.

Today, we posted a Preliminary Return to School Plan on the district website that addresses several topics of interest. Please keep in mind that many details are still being determined and will continue to evolve. Ultimately, three principles frame our work: (1) providing for the health and safety of our students, faculty and staff; (2) maximizing learning opportunities for all students, but prioritizing in-person instruction to our youngest learners and those who need additional assistance; and (3) remaining flexible–the district will likely need to adjust plans due to changing conditions associated with COVID-19

Next week on Tuesday, July 28 at 7:00 p.m. we will host a livestream panel discussion [on the GHS Media YouTube page] about our preliminary plans, featuring the co-chairs of our Reopening Steering Committee and subcommittees. Questions can be submitted ahead of time and the panel will address as many as possible. Please complete this form if you would like to submit a question.

I also want to thank everyone who participated in our reopening survey last week. There were over 2,100 responses. Although guidance from various governing bodies drives most of our plans, feedback from our community also informs our work. We plan to release the survey results in the next day or two.

Please make sure to check the district website for reopening updates, and as promised, we will send updates every Thursday throughout the summer.

Thank you again for your continued patience and partnership. I hope you are enjoying the summer, and please be safe and healthy.

Sincerely,

Dr. Marie Wiles
Superintendent of Schools
