At a ceremony held on Tuesday, May 20, 21 Guilderland High School seniors received the New York State Seal of Biliteracy (NYSSB).

Created by New York State Department of Education (NYSED) to encourage the study of languages, the NYSSB prepares students for the future with essential skills for a global society. A NYSSB distinction recognizes high school graduates who attain a high level of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing one or more languages, in addition to English. This achievement identifies students to prospective employers and college admissions officials as graduates with multilingual skills. In the Guilderland Central School District, where more than 50 home languages are spoken, the Seal of Biliteracy celebrates these languages and affirms the value of diversity.

The NYSSB takes the form of a Seal on the student’s diploma and a medallion worn at graduation.
