Each month, the art teachers from Altamont Elementary, Guilderland Elementary, Lynnwood Elementary and Westmere Elementary highlight students who have demonstrated they are practicing Studio Habits of Mind. These eight habits – develop craft, engage and persist, envision, express, observe, reflect, stretch and explore, and understand art worlds – encourage and enable students to be more mindful during the creative process. The Young Artist of the Month accomplishment acknowledges specific learning and critical thinking that happens in the art room, in relation to Studio Habits of Mind.
Altamont Elementary: Madison Romano
This month’s AES featured artist is Madison Romano, in Mrs. Aboatto’s second grade class. Madison loves art and values having a strong sense of community. She has demonstrated the artist Habit of Mind of “expression.” Madison is learning how to use her personal experiences in her community to shape and talk about her artwork. Nice work Madison!
Guilderland Elementary: Christopher Wilson
Christopher Wilson is the GES featured artist of the month. In Mrs. Comparetta’s fifth grade class, Chris has demonstrated the artist Habit of Mind of “develop craft.” He has been working hard in class to not only do his best work but also to practice his drawing skills. Chris spends time outside of class practicing as well. He has been a constant contributor to GES’ EXTRAordinary Art bulletin board and sometimes spends time on his drawings at home. All of this time and attention to drawing skills will help Chris to do amazing things in art this year and in the future. Way to go Chris!
Lynnwood Elementary: Owen Jordan
Owen Jordan, a fifth-grade student in Ms. Lewis’s class, is the LES featured artist of the month. In art class, Owen embodies the artist Studio Habit of Mind of “engage and persist.” He always challenges himself in his art. Owen shows that he is engaged in his project by focusing and doing his best work each class and shows persistence by working through challengers with the use of problem solving skills, determination and grit. Congratulations, Owen!
