Nearly 50 years ago, the Guilderland Board of Education established a committee to evaluate the contributions of district employees who have significantly impacted the Guilderland Central School District. Since then, over 500 staff members have been recognized for their exceptional service. The Employee Recognition Award is presented annually to celebrate the hard work and dedication of these remarkable individuals for their:
- Many years of loyal service;
- Leadership roles both within and outside of their job assignment;
- Significant immediate or long-term impact on students and/or employees;
- Pattern of inspiring others by example;
- Innovation and initiative in their job assignment;
- Extensive service to students outside of their job assignment;
- Responsiveness to student needs, both within and outside of the classroom;
- Accomplishments that promote the Guilderland Schools in the community and beyond; and/or
- Accomplishments in their respective field of expertise.

On Tuesday, Oct. 6, the Guilderland Central School District held its 2026 Employee Recognition Ceremony, honoring 12 exceptional staff members. These outstanding individuals were nominated by their peers and selected by a committee in recognition of their extraordinary contributions each day. This year’s honorees include:
Elisabeth Bach-Phelix
Grade 2 Teacher
Guilderland Elementary School
Elisabeth creates a classroom where every student feels valued, supported and capable of success. Drawing on her extensive special education experience, she tailors instruction to meet diverse learning needs while creating engaging experiences that build confidence, curiosity and a love of learning.
Elisabeth connects academic growth with student interests in meaningful ways. Whether guiding students in outdoor observations or bringing literature to life through hands-on activities, she makes learning memorable, accessible and fun.
A passionate advocate for students, Elisabeth volunteered to help lead the district’s adaptive co-taught second-grade program. Her expertise, collaboration and commitment have helped build a positive, student-centered environment where children with a wide range of needs can thrive.
Elisabeth is equally dedicated to supporting those around her. She readily shares ideas, celebrates student success and builds strong partnerships with families and colleagues. Shannon Bond
Districtwide Physical Therapy Assistant
For more than 25 years, Shannon has helped students achieve goals that once seemed out of reach. As a districtwide physical therapy assistant, she combines expertise, determination and compassion to help students build independence, confidence and essential life skills.
Known for the strong relationships she forms with students and families, Shannon creates a supportive environment where hard work is encouraged and progress is celebrated. She has a gift for making therapy engaging while helping students develop the skills needed to succeed in school and beyond.
A dedicated advocate, Shannon works tirelessly to ensure students have access to the resources and opportunities they need. Whether securing specialized equipment, collaborating with families or partnering with staff, she is committed to removing barriers and helping every student reach their full potential.
Through her unwavering support, encouragement and belief in every child, Shannon has made a lasting difference in the lives of countless students and families.
Christine Govin
Teaching Assistant
Guilderland Elementary School
Since joining the district in 2012, Christine has been a dedicated advocate for students, colleagues and the teaching assistant profession. As president of the Guilderland Teachers Assistant Association, she has expanded access to resources, advocacy and professional development opportunities for colleagues across the district.
Grounded in her daily work with students, Christine brings a thoughtful and practical perspective to district discussions. She helps foster communication between staff and administration while ensuring teaching assistants have a voice in decisions that affect their work.
Christine recently secured a $10,000 NYSUT grant to launch ACES, a mentoring program designed to support new teaching assistants as they begin their careers. Through her leadership and collaboration, the program promotes professional growth, supports retention and helps new staff build confidence and succeed in their roles.
Whether mentoring peers, expanding learning opportunities or supporting certification efforts, Christine is committed to advancing the field and helping others thrive. Her efforts continue to shape and strengthen the experiences of teaching assistants throughout the district.
Kristen Knapp
Social Studies Teacher
Guilderland High School
For 33 years, Kristen has been a respected educator, mentor and role model at Guilderland High School. Known for her integrity, honesty and commitment to doing what is right, she has made a lasting impact on generations of students and inspired colleagues through her leadership and dedication to education.
Kristen challenges students to think critically, take responsibility for their actions and engage thoughtfully with the world around them. Through courses such as Public Policy and her work as adviser to Students Against Destructive Decisions, she helps students develop the confidence, character and decision-making skills needed for success.
Colleagues value Kristen’s expertise and her ability to balance accountability with compassion. Students know she believes in them, supports them and provides honest guidance. Whether helping a struggling learner, mentoring peers or serving as a trusted voice within the school community, she consistently leads by example.
After more than three decades of service, Kristen’s influence can be seen in the countless students and colleagues whose lives she has touched. Her professionalism, leadership and commitment to helping others grow have left a lasting mark on Guilderland High School.
Frank Cacckello
Physical Education Teacher and Coach
Farnsworth Middle School
For more than 25 years, Frank has been a cornerstone of the Farnsworth Middle School community. As a physical education teacher, coach and mentor, he has helped students build confidence, develop resilience and embrace healthy, active lifestyles.
Frank is known for his ability to connect with students of all backgrounds and abilities. He creates an environment where every child feels welcome, supported and capable of success.
Whether teaching life lessons through athletics, adapting activities to meet diverse needs or offering encouragement at the right moment, he consistently puts students first.
His commitment to the school extends well beyond the classroom. Over the years, Frank has coached multiple sports, served as faculty manager, coordinated athletic facilities and supported initiatives that have strengthened the school’s athletic programs. Colleagues value his experience, judgment and willingness to help, while newer staff members appreciate the guidance and support he readily provides.
What sets Frank apart is his consistency. Year after year, he brings enthusiasm, positivity and dedication to those around him. As building union president and a member of several district committees, Kirsten is a valued resource for colleagues seeking guidance, support and practical solutions. Transportation Fleet Maintenance Supervisor
Justin plays a vital role in keeping students safe and the district’s transportation operations running smoothly. Over the past 20 years, he has risen from a young mechanic to fleet maintenance supervisor and now oversees the maintenance and readiness of more than 100 school buses with exceptional skill and attention to detail.
Justin’s technical expertise and problem-solving abilities have earned the trust of colleagues throughout the district. Under his leadership, the transportation fleet consistently meets high standards for safety, reliability and performance, helping ensure dependable service for students and staff.
Equally important is Justin’s willingness to step up whenever challenges arise. Whether responding to a breakdown far from home, preparing facilities during a snowstorm or driving a bus during staffing shortages, he approaches every task with professionalism, responsibility and a strong commitment to the school community.

Joelle has transformed literacy instruction at Pine Bush Elementary School through her expertise, innovation and commitment to student success. A passionate advocate for early literacy, she has dedicated countless hours to professional learning and bringing research-based reading practices into the classroom.
Recognizing the promise of Science of Reading practices early on, Joelle became a driving force behind the development of the school’s foundational phonics program. Many former students remain connected to him long after leaving his classroom.
