FMS team wins Future City national competition!

Congratulations to the Farnsworth Middle School Future City team on winning the Grand Prize at the prestigious international DiscoverE 2024 Future City® Competition.

The Future City competition brings together over 60,000 of the brightest young minds from 1,800 schools in 37 U.S. regions as well as global teams from Canada and China. Teams presented their ideas at regional competitions in January and the regional winners then faced off at the Future City Finals. This year’s theme, “electrify your future,” challenged students to imagine and design future cities that are fully electric and powered by clean, green, and renewable energy sources.

The twenty-student FMS team, known as the Dutchmen Ducks, created “He Hika,” a future city located on the Mahia Peninsula in New Zealand, which operates on hydropower, biomass, geothermal and hydrogen as energy sources.

For taking the top honors, the FMS team won the Grand Prize of a trip to U.S. Space Camp and $7,500 for the school’s STEM program (provided by finals sponsor Bentley Systems). [Watch the FMS team awarded the Grand Prize at 2:20:04.]

Congratulations to the entire FMS Future City team, their advisors and mentor on this extraordinary achievement!
