April 19 update: boards adopts 2024-25 budget; contingent holiday; Sources of Strength sponsoring 5K

A message from Dr. Wiles:

Dear GCSD Families,

At their meeting on Tuesday, April 16, the Guilderland Central School District Board of Education adopted the general operating budget for the 2024-2025 school year. This spending plan aligns with the district’s objective of empowering students to be lifelong learners by preserving a wide variety of learning opportunities, both within and beyond the classroom.

In just the past month, GCSD students’ artwork was featured in a legislative exhibit, 12 winter sports teams earned scholar-athlete recognition from NYSPHSAA, the district was recognized as a best community for music education and members of a Guilderland High School American Sign Language class spent time with Westmere Elementary School’s deaf and hard of hearing students. These are wonderful examples of how students have found what inspires them to succeed.

The $125,192,817 general operating budget for the 2024-2025 school year represents a $5,420,623, or 4.53 percent, increase in spending over the current year. If approved, the tax levy would increase by 2.74 percent, which is below the district’s levy limit, as defined by New York State’s tax levy cap legislation.

This spending plan is a result of the district having listened and responded to the school community’s priorities and needs. Through an online survey conducted in January, families, community members, faculty, staff and students identified maintaining low class sizes, expanding extracurricular activities and focusing on academics as the priorities they believe best contribute to student success. We thank all who participated to help shape the budget and its impact on GCSD students!

On Tuesday, May 21, the Guilderland community will be asked to vote on the budget, three additional propositions and to elect three members of the Board of Education. To learn more about the 2024-2025 school budget, visit the district website.

Contingent holiday

Please note that Friday, May 24 is indicated as a contingent holiday for GCSD students and staff on the school year calendar. If the district does not use more than two additional emergency closure days before that date, there will be no school and district offices will be closed. Future communications will update families as the date approaches.

GHS Sources of Strength is sponsoring 5K run

The Guilderland High School Sources of Strength program is supporting the Summer Smith 5K Addiction Awareness Memorial Run; Summer Smith was a former GHS student who struggled with this disease. The goal of this event is to reduce the stigma of addiction and to share the hope of recovery. More information can be found in the attached flyer; to become a sponsor of the event, click here.

Thank you for your continued support of Guilderland Central School District students and our school community. I hope you have an enjoyable weekend.

Sincerely,

Marie Wiles, Ph.D.
Superintendent
