Guilderland High School builds financial skills through real‑world learning

In an increasingly complex economy, financial literacy has become essential. Guilderland High School’s Business Department is preparing students for life after graduation with hands-on coursework, real-world simulations and extracurricular opportunities focused on practical money management and investing.

Two initiatives anchor that work: the school’s financial literacy programming and the Investing in Your Future Club.

On March 27, 20 club members competed in the Junior Achievement Stock Market Challenge at the University at Albany. More than 400 students from regional high schools participated in the fast-paced simulation, which mirrors the pressure of a live trading floor.

Divided into five teams, Guilderland students made real-time investment decisions while responding to market shifts and breaking news. One team placed ninth out of 126 teams, and all GHS teams achieved more than 15% portfolio growth during the competition.

“This goes far beyond a typical classroom lesson,” said Joan McGrath, co-advisor of the Investing in Your Future Club. “Students are learning to evaluate risk, think critically and make informed decisions under pressure.”

Co-advisor Michelle Schwendinger added, “The experience helps students connect classroom concepts to real-world applications while building confidence and teamwork.”

The department’s broader financial literacy efforts focus on everyday decision-making, including budgeting, career choices and long-term planning. That work was highlighted April 17 during the department’s first financial reality simulation, Broke or Ballin’.

About 100 students and 12 local businesses participated in the immersive event, developed in partnership with the school’s Business Advisory Board. Students were assigned careers, incomes and financial obligations, then rotated through stations representing housing, transportation, food, utilities, entertainment and savings.

Using a checkbook register, students made spending decisions and evaluated whether their choices could sustain their assigned lifestyle. Many adjusted their plans, prompting discussions about budgeting, prioritizing needs and managing expenses.

Together, the Investing in Your Future Club and Broke or Ballin’ reflect a hands-on approach to financial education that emphasizes real-world skills. The Business Department aims to ensure students graduate with the knowledge and confidence needed to make informed financial decisions.

The department offers several courses for students seeking to expand their financial awareness, including Career & Money Skills; Financial Literacy for Life; Inve$tEd, Personal Finance, which satisfies the economics graduation requirement; Real Life Math; and AP Business & Finance. Students can also earn a Business Certification, enhancing their graduation diploma by pursuing a Business Management Pathway during their high school years.
