Oct. 23 update: New leaders, new meeting location and opportunities to engage

A message from Superintendent Mayberry

Dear GCSD Families,

From welcoming new leaders to creating opportunities for our community to share feedback, we continue to work together to support strong, connected schools. Here are a few updates from around the district.

Change in Board of Education meeting space
The Guilderland Board of Education typically holds its meetings in the Large Group Instruction room (LGI) at Guilderland High School. As part of Phase II of the Future Ready Capital Project, the LGI will be repurposed to serve as much-needed additional space for our music program.

Beginning in November, Board of Education meetings will be held in the library classroom on the second floor of Farnsworth Middle School.

GCSD welcomes two new administrators
We are pleased to announce two new appointments to the GCSD administrative team.

Michael Burns was appointed principal of Lynnwood Elementary School at the Oct. 20 Board of Education meeting. Burns brings extensive leadership experience and a passion for elementary education to the district. He said he looks forward to building strong relationships with Lynnwood students, staff and families. His anticipated start date is Nov. 23. You can read more about Principal Burns here.

Following Andrew Van Alstyne’s resignation, effective Oct. 30, Mark Jones will join the district as interim assistant superintendent for business. Jones previously served as deputy superintendent and chief operating officer at Capital Region BOCES, where he provided leadership in school business and operations. In that role, he worked closely with local school business officials to support the efficient and effective use of resources. Jones will begin serving the district Nov. 1.

Your voice helps shape our schools
Beginning Thursday, Oct. 29, GCSD will invite families, staff and students in grades 3-12 to share their perspectives through our annual culture and climate survey. Your feedback helps us strengthen our schools and ensure every student feels welcome, supported and connected.

Look out for the survey link and more information next week!

We’re grateful for your continued involvement in our school community and look forward to hearing from you through this year’s culture and climate survey.

Sincerely,

Daniel Mayberry
Superintendent of Schools
