September 10: Welcome back to school

A message from Superintendent Wiles:

Dear Guilderland CSD families,

I’d like to welcome all GCSD students and their families back to school this week! It’s so wonderful to see our hallways and classrooms full of Guilderland students ready to begin a new year of learning. While there were some glitches, I can assure you we are working diligently to resolve these issues for a smooth-running school day. We ask for your patience over the next few days.

This summer we’ve been very busy preparing for students to return. Over 100 new staff and faculty members were hired. From custodial and office staff to school counselors and teachers at nearly every grade level, we’re fully staffed and ready for the 2021-2022 school year. Also I’m so pleased to announce that Matthew Pinchinat, a GHS social studies teacher, has accepted the position of GCSD’s first Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. You’ll be hearing much more about Mr. Pinchinat and this new position when he steps into this role on September 20.

If you drove by any of our seven school buildings this summer, chances are you would have seen construction equipment and a lot of activity. The work being conducted is part of the capital improvement project voters approved in May 2019. A small sampling of the work included is parking lot paving, tennis court replacement, foundation slab settlement correction, fire alarm/PA replacement, and back-up power upgrades. This attention and upkeep to our school buildings are very necessary since some of them date back to the early 1950s.

Finally, while we celebrate the start of a new school year, we should take a pause to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. It’s hard to believe two decades have passed and yet the pain and emotion of that awful day have not left us. However you choose to honor this solemn day, please know the Guilderland Central School District stands with you.

Thank you for your continued patience and support. I look forward to our first full week of instruction. Have a wonderful weekend.

Sincerely,

Marie Wiles, Ph.D.
Superintendent
