Dec. 22 update: GHS teacher honored by Special Olympics; budget information; new GHS course inspiring future teachers; LES recognized by P2; holiday recess

A message from Dr. Wiles:

Dear GCSD Families,

During the holiday season our thoughts often go to what we can do for others. I’m so proud there are many members of the Guilderland Central School District who do for others year-round. One such individual is Allison Relyea, Guilderland High School Unified Sports and Athletics Coach. Recently Mrs. Relyea was presented with the Unified Champion Award by Special Olympics New York in recognition of her unparalleled advocacy for students. She has been instrumental in creating an inclusive environment at GHS, most notably by leading the development of the unified sports program. Read more about Mrs. Relyea’s work toward inclusivity here.

Rollover budget information

At the Dec. 5 Guilderland Central School District board of education meeting, Assistant Superintendent for Business Andrew Van Alstyne gave a presentation about the rollover budget for the 2024-2025 school year. This is the first of several budget presentations which will be delivered to the board over the next few months, leading up to the budget vote on May 21, 2024.

Each One, Teach One

This school year GHS is offering a new course, entitled “Each One, Teach One,” that’s designed to inspire, recruit and begin training future teachers. After developing a foundation in educational philosophy and instructional strategies, GHS students have the opportunity to put what they learn into practice by teaching fourth grade students a World Language. Watch this video to see how this wonderful new course is inspiring future teachers and building relationships between students in the district.

LES recognized by the Positivity Project

I am pleased to share that Lynnwood Elementary School has been recognized by the Positivity Project as a Green Shield School for the 2022-23 school year. This designation is given to schools that exemplify character and relationship-driven systems among staff, students and families to cultivate lifelong learning and a positive school culture. One of only two schools in New York state to receive this recognition, LES is fully embracing P2 work, which allows students to view themselves in a positive way. The confidence they are developing will enable them to greatly impact learning, build strong relationships and pave the way for individual success.

Warm wishes this holiday season

Today is the last day of school for 2023; classes resume on Tuesday, January 2, 2024. As we transition to the new year, I hope you have the opportunity to rest and recharge over the break and I wish all members of the GCSD community peace, joy and good health this holiday season.

Sincerely,

Marie Wiles, Ph.D.
Superintendent
