Feb. 18 update: ThoughtExchange results; winter recess

A message from Dr. Wiles:

Dear GCSD Families,

An important part of the process of developing next year’s school budget is to gather feedback and perspective from the Guilderland Central School District community. To do so, the district ran a ThoughtExchange from Feb. 8-Feb. 14; view the results on the district website.

Announcing the Dr. Demian Singleton Memorial Scholarship

At the Feb. 15 meeting, the Board of Education approved the establishment of the Dr. Demian Singleton Memorial Scholarship. Dr. Singleton was a beloved longtime GCSD teacher and administrator who passed away in Oct. 2021. The scholarship will recognize a student who has overcome unique challenges and embodies the ideals Dr. Singleton championed: social justice, inclusion and enrichment for all. The purpose of the award will be to aid in the cost of continued education without regard for grade point average or college major.

Those interested in contributing to the Dr. Demian Singleton Memorial Scholarship may do so by sending a check payable to: Guilderland Central School District Scholarship Fund, c/o John Rizzo, GCSD District Office, 8 School Road, P.O. Box 18 Guilderland Center, NY 12085-0018. Please indicate to which scholarship you are donating via the “memo” field on your check.

In addition to the Dr. Singleton Scholarship, there are many other scholarships available to GCSD students. We encourage you to read about them here.

Winter Recess, Feb. 21-Feb. 25

There is no school next week, Feb. 21-Feb. 25, for the GCSD winter recess. We will be sending home just one update next week, on Friday, Feb. 25. I hope all GCSD families can take time to enjoy some rest and relaxation. If you’re seeking something fun and educational to do, the Albany Pine Bush Preserve is hosting a free hybrid online and in-person event. You can read more about Discover the Night here.

As always, thank you for your continued patience and support. Have a wonderful weekend.

Sincerely,

Marie Wiles, Ph.D.
Superintendent
